Ayurvedic Yoga Massage: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Healing

Updated: 6 days ago

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage (AYM) is a deeply healing bodywork system that blends the principles of Ayurveda with the dynamic stretches of yoga and the meditative focus of breathwork. Rooted in Indian healing traditions, AYM goes beyond typical massage—it is a full-spectrum therapeutic experience that reconnects body, mind, and breath.

Where AYM Comes From

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage was developed in India by Master Kusum Modak, a pioneering therapist from Pune. She studied traditional Ayurvedic massage and combined it with yoga stretches inspired by her time with the legendary yoga teacher B.K.S. Iyengar. The result is a unique approach to bodywork that is both grounding and expansive, deeply restorative yet invigorating.

This method is practiced on a mat on the floor, allowing the therapist greater freedom to use their hands, feet, and body weight to deliver deeply effective treatments. The integration of assisted yoga stretches during the session distinguishes AYM from other massage modalities.

Benefits of Ayurvedic Yoga Massage

  • Enhances flexibility and postureYoga-based stretches align the body, improve range of motion, and support long-term structural health.

The Role of Calamus in AYM

A distinctive feature of Ayurvedic Yoga Massage is the use of calamus root powder (Acorus calamus), mixed with warm oil and applied to the body during the treatment. In Ayurveda, calamus is known as Vacha, meaning “speech” or “clarity,” reflecting its use in promoting mental clarity and energetic movement.

Benefits of calamus in AYM include:

  • Stimulates circulationHelps awaken stagnant tissues and support the body's natural detox processes.

  • Natural exfoliationGently removes dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth and refreshed.

  • Energetic clearingTraditionally used to dispel lethargy and tamas (inertia) in the body and mind.

  • Uplifting and balancingIts warming nature supports kapha and vata imbalances, making it ideal for cooler or sluggish conditions.

Calamus also has mild analgesic properties, helping to ease discomfort in tense areas while promoting grounding and clarity.

The AYM Institute

The AYM Institute, based in the UK, upholds the tradition of Ayurvedic Yoga Massage with integrity, depth, and a commitment to embodied learning. Founded to preserve and evolve the teachings of Master Kusum Modak, the institute offers certified trainings, continued mentorship, and a global community of dedicated practitioners.

Their approach is holistic, focusing on intuitive touch, deep listening, and therapeutic presence. The Institute ensures that AYM practitioners are well-versed not only in technique but also in the deeper philosophy behind the practice.

Training with James Winstanley

I had the privilege of training under James Winstanley, a senior AYM therapist and lead teacher at the AYM Institute. James brings over three decades of experience in bodywork, movement, and healing. His teaching is deeply rooted in presence, compassion, and embodied wisdom.

Learning from James was a transformative experience—his gentle but powerful approach to touch, emphasis on breath, and understanding of Ayurvedic principles truly enriched my practice. He is passionate about making healing accessible and continues to mentor and inspire therapists worldwide.

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage is more than just bodywork—it's a conversation between body, breath, and being. Whether you’re looking to release tension, reconnect with your body, or explore a powerful healing tradition, AYM offers a space for deep transformation. If you’re curious to experience AYM or have questions about whether it’s right for you, I’d love to connect.
